USC Center for AI in Society (CAIS) Student Group
UPDATE (06.18.18) - Thank you so much to all of our loyal supporters for making a gift in support of our mission. It is because of you that we not only met our goal, but we surpassed it!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH! Our campaign will remain open until June 30th and any additional gifts that are made will help to support other CAIS++ projects. Thank you again and FIGHT ON!
Who Are We?
We are USC CAIS++, the student branch of the USC Center for AI in Society (CAIS). We are a student organization at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering dedicated to educating students on how they can use AI for social good.
What Do We Do?
Each semester, we take on a cohort of distinguished students across various disciplines at USC and guide them through a semester-long machine learning curriculum, complete with online lessons and in-person coding workshops. Once they have gone through this curriculum, we group them into teams to work on long-term AI-for-social-good projects of their own.
Current projects include training machine learning models to diagnose Kawasaki Disease, using computer vision for melanoma detection, and applying natural language processing to help the LA City automatically categorize its annual budget entries. (A full list of projects for the Spring 2018 semester can be found on toward the bottom of our website: http://caisplusplus.usc.edu/).
Currently, we have about 60 talented and driven members who are striving to not only continuously learn more about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning, but to apply AI to help solve pressing problems in the world around us: especially in areas that may not get attention from large companies, industry, etc.
We are seeking to raise $2,300 to power our club’s various AI-for-social-good projects, which will help our club to build two fully functioning, machine-learning enabled server computers.
Here are a list of of the items that it will cost to build one machine-learning server computer:
Since many of our projects involve training complex machine learning models on large datasets — and since not all of our members are able to afford the necessary equipment on their own — these remotely-accessible servers would allow us to sustain each of our project teams’ computing needs for the foreseeable future.
As a student-run organization, our club relies on the support and generosity of others to make sure that our workshops, projects, etc. run smoothly — especially since the sophisticated technologies we wish to apply typically require expensive, GPU-enabled computers that many of our members are not able to acquire on their own.
How You Can Help
By donating to our cause, you would be directly furthering undergraduate Machine Learning education, and supporting a student organization dedicated to creating open source AI/Machine Learning projects that produce tangible, positive impacts on the world around us. Your support would have a tremendous impact on what our members are able to achieve.
Your gift today would help allow us to build a physical, dedicated computer to host several of our deep learning-ready GPUs, thereby allowing our members to implement powerful machine learning models efficiently and effectively. With enough of these machines, we believe that CAIS++ would become a space to not only learn about AI and its applications in the real world, but to create truly sophisticated and powerful AI-based solutions to pressing and complex issues around us. We truly appreciate any and all support that our organization receives.
Any contribution, no matter how large or small, would make a definitive positive impact on not only our club’s abilities to produce meaningful projects with positive impacts on the world around us, but also on our members’ overall experiences — and hopefully, on the field of AI for good as a whole.
