SC Solar Car Team

Who Are We?

The Southern California Solar Car Team is a diverse, interdisciplinary group of talented undergraduate and graduate students dedicated to the pursuit of designing, building, and racing USC’s first ever solar powered race vehicle.

What Do We Do?

We work to provide students with a unique, hands-on opportunity to apply their engineering, business, and outreach skills to a valuable project that seeks to inspire and train students for a rapidly evolving workforce. We pride ourselves on making student learning and enrichment a priority as we know the skills and knowledge gained from this project will be key assets for our team members' futures.

As a team we will successfully construct and race our solar powered race vehicle, Traveler I.

This vehicle has been the culmination of the hard work our members have dedicated to this team for the past three years. We are confident that the completion of this vehicle will help pave the way for further research into revolutionary transportation and green energy technologies here in Southern California.

Our team is committed to inspiring the next generation of innovators, visionaries, and responsible citizens. This past year, our team has toured the west coast, speaking to several university groups about the benefits of clean, renewable energy. We hope to expand our reach to local K-12 schools and inspire others to pursue careers in technology, research, and green energy.

Our Mission

Our aim is to participate in the American Solar Challenge, which is one of the two premier solar car races in the world. This is a cross-country race spanning over 1700 miles. This year, the competition will cover parts of the famous Oregon Trail, starting in Omaha, NE and finishing in Bend, OR. The competition sees participation from teams all over the world, including University of Michigan, Stanford University and MIT.

Our Goal

We are working to successfully manufacture and race a solar powered car in the American Solar Challenge. This car will be a one-seater, street legal race car which is fully powered by solar energy. Nearly all the manufacturing and design work is performed by our team members in-house, which provides them with extremely valuable real world interdisciplinary experience.

With most of our designs complete, the focus of our team is now manufacturing and integration of the various components. We are on track to complete the entire car by the end of April, after which the new focus will be testing and refining the various systems within the car. With the competition in July, we aim to have the entirety of June for testing and are using the month of May as a buffer in case our manufacturing or troubleshooting processes take longer than expected.

Through this campaign we are hoping to raise $5,000 which will go directly towards funding materials and logistics for our race this coming July.

As we are closing in to the actual competition, these donations will be extremely crucial in completing the manufacturing of our car as well as help us fund the logistics of launching a cross country race campaign this summer.
