AIM FOR OLYMPIC GOLD
What gets Trojan Archers more excited about hitting a 10 on a target? Knowing that the Olympics are going to be held in Los Angeles in 2028! We have heard the mayor himself say that he firmly believes that anyone who picks up a bow today can still make it to the Olympics and take the gold! We also believe that our archers can take the gold. We strive every day to be the best archery club we can be, but there’s only so much that can be done. Because of this, we ask for your help!
We have set a goal to raise $5,000 for competition expenses, which will enable up to 20 archers to compete at state, regional, and national levels. These competitions prepare our archers for more advanced levels, even eligibility for the Olympics!
Trojan Archery is home to a diverse body of undergraduate and graduate students who gain physical strength, mental focus, coordination, confidence, and stress relief through our activities. This year, Trojan Archery has experienced the largest growth in membership in its history. For the 2016-2017 year, we had 25 members, 11 of whom competed across four tournaments. For the 2017-2018 year thus far, we have 60 members, 20 of whom are expected to compete across five tournaments. That is over a 200% increase in club and team membership!
Our growth comes from an increase from 2 to 13 USA Archery certified instructors, who taught close to 300 beginner archers this semester. We have also been able to increase our available practice time from 6 hours to 18 hours by improving our range on campus, as well as partnering with the Pasadena Roving Archers and Rancho Park ranges. Our archers have trained primarily in Olympic Recurve, but we are now expanding to Compound and Barebow. Our current coach, Terri MacQuarrie, is not only the president of the Pasadena Roving Archers, but she is one of only 200 Level 4 USA Archery certified NTS coaches in the country (only 15% of whom are women!).
2018 COMPETITION SEASON
In past years, team members have been able to secure several state, regional and national titles. One of our previous athletes moved on to become first alternative for the US Olympic team and was, at one point, ranked second in the nation and sixth in the world! More than ever, we have the potential to successfully train competitive archers in three styles of archery for five upcoming tournaments: Easton Collegiate Indoor; SAC State Indoor Championships; U.S. National Indoor Championships; Western Region Collegiate Outdoor; and U.S. Collegiate National Outdoor Championships. These competitions are individually based, with some team components, and have categories for both men and women. Our archers will be representing USC in competitions against many collegiate programs such as UCLA, UC Berkeley, and Stanford.
YOUR SUPPORT MATTERS
We have aimed to raise $5000 to cover and/or subsidize registration fees, transportation, and lodging for 20 team members across multiple competitions. Our membership dues can only compensate for a small portion of competition costs, and our team members cannot manage to cover competition expenses on their own. Trojan Archery team members have limited access to funds and, unfortunately, will not be able to compete without YOUR support.
We have the ingredients to bring home individual honors, as well as prestige for USC, but we need your help to get us there. These competitions could be stepping stones for some of our archers on the way to Olympic gold! Every donation is needed and is greatly appreciated. Thank you for supporting us!
