Honoring USC Veterans with a Kindergarten in Vietnam

Instructors from the Viterbi School of Engineering Aviation Safety and Security program, many of whom are veterans, have personally contributed over $22,000 to build a Kindergarten in the central Vietnamese province of Quang Tri. They need your support to raise the additional $22,000 to make this project a reality.

The USC Safe Children Kindergarten will be built on land safely cleared of the explosive remnants of war by PeaceTrees Vietnam, and will be dedicated in honor of USC veterans. This project -- initiated by Tom Anthony, Director of the USC Viterbi Aviation Safety and Security Program -- is personally meaningful to me and I can speak firsthand about its impact. My name is Sue Warner-Bean and I’m one of the program instructors. My big brother, USMC Corporal David Warner, was killed in action in Vietnam. For the past 17 years, I have been involved with PeaceTrees Vietnam, a US-based non-governmental organization founded in 1996 by the sister of a US Army helicopter pilot killed in the war. PeaceTrees’ primary mission is to clear the land of unexploded bombs, mines, and other munitions that remain a threat to this day.

When the land safely cleared, PeaceTrees partners with the local population to plant trees, and support development and educational projects such as libraries and kindergartens.

Such is our project to build the USC Safe Children Kindergarten. I hope you will take three minutes to view the wonderful short video showing one of the kindergartens Peace Trees has established on land cleared of unexploded ordnance, ThDavid Warner Kindergarten, named for my brother. Our USC Safe Children Kindergarten will look very similar.

The northernmost province of the former South Vietnam, Quang Tri Province bordered the demilitarized zone and was one of the most heavily bombed areas during the war. That’s why PeaceTrees’ work – and our project – are located there. For every square meter of land in Quang Tri, 600 pounds of bombs, mines, grenades, and other munitions were deployed. An estimated 10-30% didn't explode and remains volatile. Nearly fifty years after the war, it still poses a daily threat to the families and children who live there.

Our kindergarten will be located in the small Quang Tri village of Cup (pronounced Coop.) The people of Cup are of the Van Kieu ethnic minority with their own language. Many, even most, live below the national poverty line of $150 USD per year. Malnutrition is prevalent. At Kindergarten, children can learn Vietnamese to help ease their entry into public school and can receive a daily nutritious meal.

The village of Cup has children ready to attend Kindergarten, but it doesn’t have enough classroom space to accommodate them or the money to build. That is why we are trying to raise $22,000 in support of this project. The gifts that we receive will help fund the classroom, including all furnishings and supplies; a kitchen; and five years of daily nutritious lunches to allow the children to grow and learn. It will be undertaken in partnership with PeaceTrees Vietnam and is also being supported with contributions from the local district government.

Interested donors to this project can be provided with updates on construction as building progresses, and also receive information about visiting the site and attending the dedication in person as part of a USC PeaceTrees Citizen Diplomacy trip.

Program instructors from USC Viterbi's Aviation Safety and Security have personally contributed more than half the amount needed for this project. We are asking for your help to complete it and honor our USC veterans by creating a safer, brighter future for the children of Cup through the USC Safe Children Kindergarten.

No matter the amount, every gift makes a difference. Thank you for your consideration in making a gift in support of this project to help heal the legacy of war, make a bright future for the children of Vietnam, and honor our veterans who have sacrificed so much.

NOTE: Any additional funds raised over $22,000 will be used in support of the Kindergarten, addressing needs such as playground equipment, additional supplies, and facility maintenance, to be jointly identified by the Cup community and PeaceTrees.

*Peace Trees Vietnam was established as the first U.S. organization permitted to sponsor humanitarian demining efforts after U.S. Vietnam diplomatic relations were normalized in 1995. Funded by private donors and grants from the U.S. State Department, PeaceTrees continues its work in Quang Tri Province and neighboring Quang Binh today.
