USC Racing - Road to the 2022 Formula SAE Competition

USC Racing is the University of Southern California chapter of Formula SAE (FSAE). We are an entirely student-run organization that designs, constructs, tests, and races a high-performance autocross race car. Our team consists of a diverse group of more than 50 members, ranging from freshmen to graduate students. Though most members major in mechanical engineering, we have representatives from across Viterbi and all of USC. Since our re-founding in 2010, the team has committed itself to building a strong knowledge base to progress our technical expertise and provide students of all backgrounds a formative and exciting learning experience outside of the classroom. USC Racing prides itself on its motorsports prowess and it’s exhilarating and highly valuable out-of-the-classroom experience it provides all USC students.

The Road to the 2022 Formula SAE Competition

After our 2020 season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us were saddened that we couldn't see the fruits of our labor. However, instead of slowing us down, that has fired us up as we work hard to be ready for our next competition and build our competitive success. FSAE has recently confirmed there will be an in-person racing element to the 2022 event doubling the importance of taking advantage of every opportunity.

At the Formula SAE competitions, our team competes with some of the most renowned engineering schools in the country and the world such as MIT, Berkeley, Stanford, Cornell, Oregon State, the University of Texas, and Duke. Furthermore, FSAE is judged by industry professionals from companies such as SpaceX, Tesla, Ford, and General Motors. As a result, the Formula SAE competition is an opportunity for our team to gain exposure and for USC Viterbi to reinforce its reputation as one of the world’s top engineering schools. While USC Racing is a team in itself, we are also proud to be a part of the community that the University of Southern California is so well known for, and are excited and determined to represent our community against a worldwide competition.

Our Goal

Our team is trying to raise $5,000 to help with the additional funds we need to complete our racecar and to cover expenses to travel to the 2022 Formula SAE Competition in Brooklyn, Michigan at the Michigan International Speedway. We are currently in the manufacturing process of the car - our frame is complete, engineering drawings are being sent out, and external manufacturing is being coordinated. This year, we are excited to use the now fully operational Baum Family Maker Space and its manufacturing capabilities to be able to bring more of the building process in-house. With this, we will continue to better learn about this part of the manufacturing process, which will cyclically improve our designs as we move forward.

This past year the FSAE has determined that they will only host races in the state of Michigan. This was unexpected, as we have only traditionally attended west coast events. This location burdens us with more expensive transportation costs, especially with costs associated with trailering the car to competition. We have approximated that the increased costs will be around $5,000, which has led us to our target for the Ignite Campaign.

EVERY GIFT, NO MATTER THE SIZE, WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Only with your support, will we be able to make our $5,000 goal to complete our car and make it to the 2021 Formula SAE competition.

Please consider making a gift in support of our team TODAY!
