Who Are We?

The USC EERI Student Chapter is an extension of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute with the purpose of providing students opportunities for networking and research collaboration. The USC EERI Student Chapter also aims to help students stay up-to-date with the latest developments in the areas of earthquake and related civil engineering, and spark enthusiasm within fellow students and faculty from different departments. Our members are encouraged to further develop leadership and interpersonal skills, expand their practical experience, and receive valuable networking opportunities with recognized professionals in the earthquake engineering fields.

The objective of the EERI USC Student Chapter is to promote the study and practice of earthquake engineering, science, planning, and policy, by improving inter-disciplinary communication and raising community awareness about the dangers of earthquakes and methods to mitigate their effects.

Our Mission

USC EERI consists of approximately 20 civil engineers and architects from across all class standings at USC. Our design team is centered around the Seismic Design Competition, which is an annual week-long competition held by the Student Leadership Council of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute. Over the course of a week, there will be a set-up day, presentation day, judging day, workshop day, as well as networking events to showcase our 5-foot balsa wood model.

Our team has already been awarded money from the Viterbi Competition & Design Funding Committee, to help cover the costs of all the materials needed to design and build our balsa-wood model to compete at the 2022 Seismic Design Competition in Salt Lake City, UT.

Unfortunately, the funds we received are not enough to cover travel expenses and other associated costs related to our team traveling to the week-long competition that will take place between June 27, 2022 to July 1, 2022. Therefore, we are trying to raise additional funds to help cover the costs for transportation (to transport our team members, as well as our 5-foot balsa wood building model to Utah), and to support expenses for lodging and meals for our team members.

Here is the breakdown of what we are raising funds for:

Our Goal

Our goal is to raise $3,200 to help offset all of the costs related to our trip to the Seismic Design Competition. We work hard all year for this and we want to be able to make it financially possible for our members to travel to and showcase/compete our model against other EERI teams from around the world at this yearly competition.

By making a gift today, you will help USC EERI students to have an invaluable experience in their development as engineers and leaders.  Your gift will also help to empower the next generation of leaders in engineering.

No matter the amount, every gift makes a difference, so we thank you in advance for your support of USC EERI.
