ASBME - Supporting Local Residents In-Need with Community Fridges

The Associated Students of Biomedical Engineering (ASBME) is a student-led undergraduate biomedical engineering organization at USC that serves the engineering student body with a comprehensive calendar of academic, social, mentoring, outreach, and professional events. These events foster a collaborative, inclusive community for our membership that allows students to gain insight into both their chosen field of study and the opportunities that are specific to the biomedical engineering major. In short, ASBME strives to act as the ultimate resource for all students with a vested interest in biomedical engineering.

As students living in Los Angeles, it is our responsibility to take care of the community that has graciously opened its arms to us. LA has always housed one of the largest homeless populations in the nation, making food insecurity a major concern. 1 in 5 people in Los Angeles County has lived with food insecurity at the beginning of 2020; this proportion has unfortunately risen to 1 in 4 people since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

To combat this issue, ASBME is partnering with the LA Community Fridge Program to help supply food and other basic necessities to those in need. This program has provided refrigerators across LA that citizens can benefit from — however, it’s up to the community to ensure that these fridges remain stocked with supplies. As current circumstances have increased the demand for supplies, ASBME needs donations to help stock these fridges to assist the local community. Funds raised by our team will help to purchase items such as:

  • Fresh produce
  • Canned goods
  • Pre-prepared meals
  • Hygiene products.

Once we receive the funds, we will make trips to local stores to buy the supplies needed to stock the fridges. Our mission is to buy supplies periodically with the goal of keeping the fridges stocked for as long as we can.

With a goal of $1,500, we will be able to purchase a lot of supplies to help support those in our community who are in need.

To learn more about this program, please visit the following links for information about the LA community fridge program and its locations around the city.

ASBME and the LA community appreciate donations of any amount.

Thank you so much for your support in this process and Fight On!
