USC Racing is the University of Southern California chapter of Formula SAE (FSAE). We are an entirely student-run organization that designs, constructs, tests, and races a high-performance autocross race car. Our team consists of a diverse group of more than 40 members, ranging from freshmen to graduate students. Though most members major in mechanical engineering, other majors include electrical engineering, aeronautical engineering, business, and communication. Since our re-founding in 2010, the team has committed itself to building a strong knowledge base to progress our technical expertise and provide students of all backgrounds a formative and exciting learning experience outside of the classroom. USC Racing prides itself on its motorsports prowess and it’s exhilarating and highly valuable out of the classroom experience it provides all USC students.
The Road to the 2021 Formula SAE Competition
After our 2020 season was cut short due to COVID, many of us were saddened that we couldn't see the fruits of our labor. However, instead of slowing us down that has fired us up as we work hard to be ready for the 2021 competition and build our competitive success. FSAE has recently confirmed there will be an in-person racing element to the 2021 event doubling the importance of taking advantage of every opportunity. At the Formula SAE competitions our team competes with some of the most renowned engineering schools in the country and the world such as MIT, Berkeley, Stanford, Cornell, Oregon State, the University of Texas, and Duke. Furthermore, FSAE is judged by industry professionals from companies such as SpaceX, Tesla, Ford, and General Motors. As a result, the Formula SAE competition is an opportunity for our team to gain exposure and for USC Viterbi to reinforce its reputation as one of the world’s top engineering schools. While USC Racing is a team in itself, it is also a proud part of the community that the University of Southern California is so well known for, and is excited and determined to represent that community successfully against worldwide competition.
Our team is trying to raise $10,000 to help with the additional funds we need to complete our racecar and to cover expenses to travel to the 2021 Formula SAE Competition.
We are currently in a design improvement stage of our schedule and simultaneously completing the build form last year. Some of the parts that we used on our previous cars will transfer over, but some of the most complex manufacturing jobs are still to come. Our biggest cost, especially compared to previous years, will be making more parts out of house to stay on schedule.
RENDERINGS: This year the car will have a 4 cylinder engine with a completely redesigned space frame. The biggest design change that we executed was changing from a 13” wheel package to a 10” wheel package to create a lighter and faster car. We are also moving to direct actuation for our front suspension and have new procedures for creating our carbon fiber wings that allow for more complex and efficient aero package.
Also, since FSAE has not determined a location, logistical costs of transporting our car will be more than that of previous years. Additionally, the truck rental and the numerous test days we will need to do leading up to the competition will be a large expense. Your support will help us greatly and would be most appreciated.
EVERY GIFT, NO MATTER THE SIZE, WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Only with your support, will we be able to make our $10,000 goal to complete our car and make it to the 2021 Formula SAE competition.
