The Impact of USC Leventhal

The USC Leventhal School of Accounting has been consistently recognized among the best in the world because of its dedicated and talented people. The USC Leventhal family — award-winning faculty, students committed to making a difference in the profession and the world, and alumni who are lifelong friends of the university — positions the school to lead the way in accounting education.

Educating the next generation of accountants and shaping the future of the profession are profound responsibilities. The USC Leventhal family is dedicated to providing future leaders in accounting with an elite education that goes beyond technical knowledge and emphasizes critical thinking, communication and, especially, ethics, and to pursuing cutting-edge research that is valuable to academics, practitioners and policymakers.

Together, we are achieving great things. Here are just a few examples of the Leventhal family working for a better future.

Students in the Community and Around the World

As a first-generation college student at Cerritos College, Axel Fuentes Gutierrez ’20 never dreamed about going to USC. Gutierrez is one of many students whose lives were changed by the Leventhal Leadership Program. LLP is a seminar program that takes an individualized approach to helping first-generation students make the transition from community college to USC.

Tax season is a busy time for Leventhal students. USC VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance), a student-run organization that provides pro bono tax assistance to families and students with moderate to low incomes in the Central Los Angeles community, prepares more than 1,000 returns each year, logging over 2,000 volunteer hours.

Leventhal students consistently place well in national case competitions. Two teams of Leventhal MBT students participated last fall in the annual Deloitte FanTAXtic case competition, and Team A took second place. USC Leventhal was the national winner in the 2017 competition, which featured 60 teams from 43 schools.

Innovative Programs and Cutting-Edge Curriculum

The first graduates of the MAcc D+A (Master of Accounting with Data and Analytics) walked at Commencement in 2019. The MAcc D+A delivers a firm foundation in accounting, audit and financial reporting with a focus on data and analytics and the enabling of IT capabilities. This program represents a collaboration between the USC Leventhal School of Accounting and the Data Sciences and Operations Department of the USC Marshall School of Business. More than anything else, we want to teach our students to react to quick and constant change in varied environments and to thoughtfully develop solutions in the world of business, accounting, auditing and data analysis in order to be the leaders of the next generation.

The new Risk Management Program grew out of a partnership between Marshall and the Southern California insurance and risk community. The program’s priorities are twofold: to design a curriculum that equips students with the skills and tools to take on the challenges and opportunities of managing risk in a digital and networked economy, and to introduce students to professional development opportunities in risk management through networking, mentorships and internships. Currently, students can earn a minor in this area of study and position themselves to secure a career in a field where 400,000 positions are expected to be open by 2020.
