2016 ASBME Makeathon

Support the 2016 ASBME Makeathon!

The Associated Students of Biomedical Engineering (ASBME) is a student-run undergraduate and graduate biomedical engineering organization at USC that serves the engineering student body through academic, social and corporate events. Students gain clarity of their chosen field and the opportunities that await them. Students are also able to get a foot in the corporate door at the annual ASBME corporate dinner, attended by USC alumni as well as other corporate representatives.

ASBME membership is open to any registered undergraduate or graduate student at USC who is currently interested in the biomedical field. ASBME caters strongly to students majoring in biomedical engineering (BME), biomedical-biochemical engineering (BMEC), biomedical-mechanical engineering (BMEL), biomedical-electrical engineering (BMEN), or any other related field.

This year ASBME would like to host an inaugural event at USC Viterbi called The Makeathon, a medical device design competition in which student teams from both USC and other universities will compete to solve a challenge with a limited amount of time and resources.

What is the Makeathon?

The Makeathon is like a hackathon for designers instead of coders. In 30 hours, 20 teams of 4-5 members will brainstorm, design and create a device under specific rules and guidelines, such as material and functional constraints. After eight hours, teams will present preliminary designs to a panel of judges who will deliberate and select five teams that will move on to the device fabrication round. These five teams will utilize USC’s Fabrication Lab to construct their designs from a variety of materials and methods.

All teams will prepare a final presentation to be delivered to the panel of judges as well as to the rest of the students that will cover design motivations, device functionality, impact on the field or on client needs, as well as other device- and field-related information.

One grand prize winner will be chosen and sent to production; two runner-up winners will also be selected.

How can you help?

Our event is scheduled to take place on February 26th and 27th at the USC campus, and we need help in providing funding for items, including:

  • Fabrication costs (prototype materials for the teams);
  • Food and beverages for the student participants;
  • Advertisement and marketing for the event;
  • Awards for the winners

The Makeathon will not only help students with team-building skills, but it is a way for us to creatively use the skills and knowledge they have learned in classrooms and apply them to real-word situations.

Any gift, no matter the amount, will be greatly appreciated.
