The Associated Students of Biomedical Engineering (ASBME) is a student-run undergraduate and graduate biomedical engineering organization at USC that serves the engineering student body through academic, social, and corporate events. Through ASBME, students gain clarity of their chosen field and the opportunities that await them. Students are also able to get a foot in the corporate door at the annual ASBME corporate dinner, attended by USC alumni as well as other corporate representatives.
This year we would like to host our 4rd Annual Makeathon Event at USC Viterbi, a medical device design competition in which student teams from both USC and other universities will compete to solve a challenge with a limited amount of time and resources.
The Makeathon is like a hackathon for designers instead of coders. In 30 hours, 15 teams of 4-5 members will brainstorm, design, and create a device under specific rules and guidelines, such as material and functional constraints. After eight hours, teams will present preliminary designs to a panel of judges who will deliberate and give feedback to the students based on their initials designs and prototypes. Next, each team moves on to fabrication, and they will utilize USC’s Fabrication Lab as well as 3D printers to construct their designs from a variety of materials and methods. All teams will prepare a final presentation to be delivered to the panel of judges as well as to the rest of the students that will cover design motivations, device functionality, impact on the field or on client needs, as well as other device- and field-related information. One grand prize winner will be chosen and sent to production; two runner-up winners will also be selected. Our event is scheduled to take place on February 8-10th at the USC campus.
We have already secured the majority of the funding needed for the event, which will go towards securing the event site, awards for the winners, marketing, and some of the prototype materials for the team. However, additional support is needed.
We need to raise an additional $3,000 so that we can procure the following for our event:
Your support would assist us in being able to put on our event and make it the best it can be. The Makeathon is an amazing event - it not only teaches students team-building skills, but is also a way for them to creatively apply and develop the skills and knowledge they have learned in classrooms and apply them to real-word situations.
A gift of any size would be greatly appreciated. We cannot do this without your support. Thank you in advance for your gift!
