We are the Musical Theatre Repertory (MTR). Founded in 2005, MTR's mission is to provide high quality, innovative theatre produced by students, for students. We provide opportunities for students to hone their performance, production, and design skills through involvement in our semesterly musicals. Within the USC community, we stand as the only ISP (independent student production) that solely produces musicals. This specialization allows for students from all backgrounds to participate in creating a show. From musicians to directors, lighting designers to technical directors, MTR gives students the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of what it takes to put on a show.

We are fundraising for our Spring musical, Anastasia! MTR relies on donations to fund our productions. Specifically, most donations go directly to our designer budget. This allows our student designers to dream bigger and be more innovative. Anastasia is MTR's primary project this semester. It is our most ambitious musical yet, with over 50 students working together to make it come to life. Productions such as Anastasia unite students from all majors and backgrounds. MTR does not charge for tickets, but instead relies on donations. With the help of funding, we are able to keep putting on musicals every semester.

Anastasia is set pre and post-revolution Russia. This has created a fun creative challenge for our design team as they work to recreate the era for our audience. Most donations would go to the designer budget to help realize this vision.

Some examples of how designer budgets are used in this production include:
  • Costume designers buying fabric to make imperial-era Russian gowns.
  • Lighting designers renting lights for explosion sequences and creating different color schemes for different characters.
  • Technical directors and scenic designers purchasing lumber and paint for our ballroom-style set.

A small portion of donations would also go to help pay for the rights to Anastasia and the venue that we are using.
